Hello! I am Shannon Bolen, creator of SoundLiteracy.org. I am a music educator based in Houston, Texas and love sharing ideas with others on how to make my classroom a more fun, exciting space for my students to learn. I am a huge lover of music, teaching, and all things technology!
Inspired by Jackie Wiggin's definition of music literacy, sound literacy is the ability to listen, create, and comprehend sounds within a broad range of contexts. Since 2015, it's been my passion to promote sound literacy. This journey started after I finished my studies in music education and continued my education in sound design. I learned the technical terminology for describing sounds, the influence of sounds, and created sounds to share a narrative. I discovered new paths of understanding and experiencing sounds and music. Ultimately, I wanted to merge the two worlds of music terminology with sound design terminology to better serve my students.
My philosophy as a music educator is to help students reach their full potential by utilizing their skills learned from listening, creating, and comprehending sound and music to transfer to all aspects of their life.
SoundLiteracy.org is a resource site to help educators of all subjects find ideas to easily integrate sound literacy into their lessons.
